One of my favourite techniques with scrapbooking is to combine and layer different patterns and elements. When I created this layout recently, I loved how the "white space" on the layout wasn't really white space as (if you look closely) the background is some Core Impressions cardstock.
I simply gave it a light sand to reveal the subtle pattern that was embossed right on there!
Well, it's renewed my love and fascination with Core'dinations cardstock! I love that it is so versatile and since cardstock is one of my staples, it's a way to fancy it up a bit and broaden my style as I experiment with different techniques!
So . . . I've been creating, looking for ways to show off the magic of Core'dinations cardstock and I have a couple of new projects to share!
I just had to scrap this photo of my little boy dressed in his sister's butterfly costume! And the fun photo called for a fun layout!
There's lots and lots of layering here and I love that when you sand and/or distress the edges of the cardstock, the lighter colour core is revealed adding another element of interest!
I chose three colours of cardstock to coordinate with my photos and created scalloped and embossed strips to ground my photo on.
I cut/punched the strips first and then ran them through my die cut machine with an embossing folder. Now, it can be a bit tricky to emboss a longer strip using the small embossing folders, especially when you want the pattern up a certain way!
Here's a peek at how I did it in three stages, moving the folder and lining it up each time.
And of course, a quick sand at the end to reveal the core!

I'm not one for re-inventing the wheel BUT I do like to put my own spin on things so when I was inspired by some patchwork patterns on Pinterest recently, I had to piece one together and . . . you guessed it . . . Core'dinations cardstock is perfect for this technique!
How awesome is that chevron pattern? And it was so easy! Here's a step by step in case you want to try it yourself!
1. Cut strips of cardstock 2" wide.
2. Cut each strip into 2" squares, you should get 6 from each strip.
3. & 4. Cut each square in half diagonally to get to equal triangles. I did this using my trimmer as I'm ok if each triangle is not exactly perfect!
5. Start laying your triangles into the chevron pattern using the picture as a guide. I placed the top row first.
6. Repeat the design from the bottom of the page.
7. Repeat with your third and final colour, centering it between the top and bottom chevrons.
8. When you're happy with the placement, you need to adhere each one down . . this takes patience but is so worth it!
9. Finish up your layout!
TIP: I sanded my cardstock strips before cutting into squares and triangles!
Here's a look at some more details of the finished layout.
I popped all the other elements up on pop dots to stand out from the background somewhat.
I had a lot of journaling to add to this layout as I wrote my girl a letter the night before I had our second baby. I typed it up and slid it behind the main part.
Thanks for visiting and I hope I've inspired you with a few different ways to use your cardstock!
Have a great weekend!
